today is mainly marimekko

'The weekend starts here' will be back next week with another great interview, but on this lovely sunny friday (which feels like the first real friday of spring to me) I wanted to indulge you with a bit of Marimekko.  Followers of patternbooth will know I'm a fan, in fact I've featured them before, so thank goodness for a new season and new patterns!

Marimekko, the oh so stylish Finnish design house, that has been bringing us brilliant patterns for over sixty year. They do of course have a new range for spring and it's my pick of these patterns I want to share...

"With this spring season, we've explored items for the home inspired by compelling landscapes and the natural wonders of a spring day. We've also created a clothing collection that combines stand-out hues with a bold graphic language - a modern interpretation of Marimekko's essence, the art of print making."

This pattern, Jokiuoma, graces the front cover of Marimekko's spring edition paper. It is designed by the fabulous Sanna Annukka, and I love it. It fits in perfectly with this seasons theme 'colour for a reason'.

Next this playful design by Ville Silvennoinen. Ville is one of the newest members of the design team. He began his involvement with Marimekko by participating in their apprentice programme, and he went on to complete his masters thesis with them...resulting in his pattern 'Maja' being released last year. 'Kippo' is his latest offering.

Marimekko translates it's strong and vibrant patterns brilliantly to fashion and textiles.  Their bold colours and designs have so many applications...

... and their willingness to design for large scale prints makes them stand out from the crowd. I love work at this scale.

The 'Musta Virta' pattern (which translates to 'black stream') was designed by Paavo Halonen & Hanna-Kaisa Korolainen.  The pattern was inspired by the forceful movement of ice and water at the moment of melting.

The 'Astro' pattern below, was designed by Jenni Tuominen, who took her inspiration from the movement of planets.

The spring fresh 'Jurmo' pattern (above) was designed by Aino-Maija Metsola was inspired by austere island scenery. It works brilliantly applied to this towel.

So it is fair to say this spring collection has a lot going for it and I can happily add these new designs to a long list of my Marimekko favourites. So get your Converse on...and step out into spring with some new pattern loves.
